Here’s a report from my muslim friend Amy about the new prayer room in Takashimaya in Shinjuku! Takashimaya in Shinjuku is starting new services for foreign tourists and setting up a prayer room was one of them.

While going out near Shinjuku area, Muslims now can take their time shopping and no longer worry about prayer times. Because a prayer room has been set up at 11th floor of Takashimaya department store, which is situated near the JR New South exit. Tokyu Hands and Uniqlo are in the same building, while Kinokuniya Book store is very near.

You will be able to get on the 11th floor by elevator. On the same floor, there’s Hobbies and Handicrafts shop, namely Yuzawaya. The prayer room is situated close to the exhibition hall and toilets. The room is quite big, carpeted with an arrow pointing to the direction of Kiblat. However, praying mat (sejadah) and prayer veil for ladies (telekung) are not provided. Ablution (wudhu) is possible in the room itself, as there are water faucets and drain provided (photo). In case there are other people using the room, there are dividers that can be use while praying and also curtains in the abulation area.

When I wanted to use the room, the way leading to the prayer room was actually close to public due to preparation for exhibition hall, but a friendly staff was standing near a “Prayer room” sign and she guided me to it. I think the room would have been easy to find when there is no preparation going on in the exhibition hall, because there are signs, which are very easy to understand, leading to it.
